Walking - Situated on the 180-mile long Tarka Trail, Eggesford Barton offers a number of beautiful walks on trails and footpaths to Eggesford & Heywood Forest, where you can see the ancient Mott & Bailey. The area by the River Taw is unspoilt and an ideal place to watch the wildlife such as Kingfishers and Otters. Local maps are available to help you plan your route. Mountain biking is also popular in Eggesford Forest.

Fishing - A pleasant stroll through the woodland and pastureland leads down to the River Taw, where 800 metres of river frontage awaits guests, and where superb salmon and trout fishing is available. Beyond the contrasting woodland and pastureland of the estate, a stretch of the River Taw offers keen anglers the chance to enjoy a spot of salmon and trout fishing whilst on holiday - although there is a limited amount of tackle available on-site, guests are requested to bring their own.

Horse Riding - The surrounding forests offer wonderful horse-riding country. Local stables offer hacking at very reasonable rates.

Golf - Golf enthusiasts will find a par 3 golf course within the pretty village of Chulmleigh (2 miles), which is the nearest village to Eggesford Barton.

Chulmleigh - The charming village of Chulmleigh dates from Quite self-sufficient, it boasts a bakery, post office and a choice of three pubs. For eating out, Chulmleigh has two recommended restaurants: one specialising in fish dishes and the other in Indian cuisine. Also within a few miles, Winkleigh has an award-winning restaurant famous for its food and local cider. Lying within the Devonshire heartland, the properties make a fine base for touring, with Dartmoor & Exmoor National Park.

The Tarka Line - The Tarka line, which stops at Eggesford, is a great way to savour the pretty area by train.

Beaches - The wonderful beaches of North Devon are within an hour’s drive of Eggesford. Saunton sands, Woolacombe and Croyde are some of the offer some of the best surfing in the country. Saunton Sands is a National trust beach and dog walking is allowed all year through.

Exeter - Take in the heritage of Exeter with its wonderful cathedral, leisure activities, theatre and cinema. It’s easy to spend a day just taking in this ancient city, but if you feel like wandering out of the city the fishing towns along the estuary such Topsham are well worth a visit.

Barnstaple - Barnstaple grew up in the 9th and 10th centuries, on a ford of the river. It developed as a market and commercial centre, with pottery, metalwork and other industries that served the surrounding area. It also became the base for enterprising merchants who traded with Europe, Ireland and the New World. Don’t miss the Pannier market and the special kind of welcome this historic capital of North Devon has to offer.

Dartmoor & Exmoor - Eggesford lies between the two moors and both may be reached within the hour. Walkers dreams, these two areas of outstanding natural beauty are a must if you’re in the region.
