Eggesford is a small parish in beautiful mid Devon. There is no village as such, as the settlement developed around the main estate house, Eggesford House. There is talk of an original Manor House sited near Eggesford Gardens, however, the first Eggesford House was sited next to the church. This house was demolished & many structures, such as the oak beams, were used to improve Eggesford Barton and other houses in the surrounding villages. A reset stone above the main door to Honey Cottage carved with the letters of Edward Chichester and his wife Mary “ECM 1626” was from the original house next to the church. The remains of the new Eggesford House build in the early 19th century can now be seen on the hill opposite Eggesford Barton. This was the estate house of the Earls of Portsmouth. Eggesford Barton is believed to date from the early
18th century and was developed throughout the 18th and 19th centuries.
